Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae:
Berat Başer is an English Language Instructor at the School of Foreign Languages at Boğaziçi University. She worked as the Assistant Director of Student Affairs in the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Boğaziçi between July 2021 and July 2022 and a Level Representative in the Academic Affairs Committee in the Preparatory Division of the SFL between September 2018 and October 2020. Currently, she is working on her Ph.D. dissertation on Business English as a lingua franca interactions with Prof. Barbara Seidlhofer and Hon. Prof. Henry Widdowson in the Department of English at the University of Vienna. Her research focuses on pragmatics of English as a lingua franca communication and its pedagogical implications in English language teaching, negotiating interpersonal relations (in Business English as a lingua franca interactions), discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics (qualitative). Recently, she has been to the University of Oxford and the University of Vienna as a Guest Researcher, and she has been giving Business Negotiations and Bargaining Lectures at the United Nations Youth and Student Association of Austria, Business Negotiation Club. Before coming to Boğaziçi, she taught English at different levels in Vienna, Austria and worked as a Media Analyst/ Researcher in the U.S. Embassy there. She holds an M.A. in English in the Department of English at the University of Vienna and a B.A. in the Department of Foreign Language Education at Boğaziçi University. Along with the B.A., she minored in American Studies in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Boğaziçi University. She also studied in the English Department and American Studies Department at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton as an exchange student. Ms. Başer is proficient in both English and German, and a Turkish-native speaker. She can also read Latin.
Research Interests:
Pragmatics, pragmatics of English as a lingua franca communication and its pedagogical implications, negotiating interpersonal relations (in English as a lingua franca Service Encounters), discourse analysis, intercultural communication, corpus linguistics (qualitative), teaching English online.
